VMTabs™

Virtual labs for schools

VMTabs gives every student their own virtual machines, opened in a browser tab. Instructors build a machine once, deploy a copy to a whole course or one section, and watch the class work. Students get a real operating system to configure, break and fix, with nothing to install.

It runs on the school's own lab servers, so student work and data stay on campus.

  • ForNetworking, cybersecurity and systems courses, from high school through college
  • IsolationEach student's machines share a private network that no other student can reach
  • CoursesSections, enrollment, labs with instructions and grading, and a library of lecture materials
  • Learning systemsStudents open labs straight from Canvas or Blackboard (LTI 1.3), and grades go back
  • In classBrowser console for every VM, live screen previews, file hand-out, power and reset for a whole class
  • HostingOn-site, on the school's own servers

VMTabs is our first product.

How we build

On the school's hardware

Our software runs where the school decides, on servers it owns. Nothing about a student has to leave campus for the product to work.

Isolation you can test

Students are kept apart by design, and every release is checked against it: each route of the app is tried as every role, and a self-test inside a lab machine reports anything it can reach that it shouldn't.

Small enough to maintain

Few moving parts: a handful of well-known open-source libraries, one database file, signed updates that install themselves and roll back if a check fails.

Built for the person in the room

Instructors run a whole class of machines from one page. Students click a link and are working. Plain words, keyboard access and readable contrast throughout.

Company

syn·apse, n.The junction where one nerve cell passes a signal to the next. Learning happens there.

Synapsalot makes software that turns instruction into practice. We started with the lab, because that is where a student finds out whether they can actually do the thing: set up the network, harden the server, find the fault.

Synapsalot is based in Richmond, Rhode Island, and was founded in 2026.
